3 Motivators You Need to Work Hard and Become Successful in Life

Goal: Discuss what motivates us towards success

Why Do Some of Us Work Hard and Some of Us Just Sit on Our A$%$% All Day? Is it just laziness?

Many years ago I asked a group of students, “What is preventing you from being successful?” Their answers were very enlightening. About 50% said that they were lazy. The rest of the group said that they were not motivated.

Personally I believe that motion always comes before emotion.

From my life experience, I would like to suggest that it is not laziness. There exist three motivators that pull a person forward to work hard. Daniel Pink first discussed these motivators in one of his books.

So what are these three motivators?

First motivator is Autonomy. What is Autonomy? Webster’s defines it as:

1: the quality or state of being self-governing

2: self-directing freedom and especially moral independence

3: a self-governing state

I believe that the second definition is what best describes autonomy. By having the freedom to self-direct makes you feel that you are in charge of your choices. This freedom of choice is what propels you to do the work.

Second Motivator is Mastery. One of Webster definition best describes it as

2a: possession or display of great skill or technique

2b: skill or knowledge that makes one master of a subject : COMMAND

Mastery is possessing great skill or technique. That level of skill or knowledge makes one master of a subject. Having reached a level of a master one is able to operate at a very high level without much stress and need to prove one self. Many authors claim that a level of mastery can be achieved within 10000 hours. Some have imply 20000 hours to reach that level.

My definition of mastery is ability to exert minimum effort while achieving maximum results. For some it only takes 5000 hours. For others it is 10000+. It does require time that can not be squeezed down in one day.

Last motivator is Purpose. When working for a company or someone else, it is often difficult to claim that the work you are doing fulfills one’s purpose. It could but most often it does not. If it did then that would motivate you to complete the task.

It is the intersection of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose with emotions that provides the motivation for a person to work harder. Each one nudges us forward BUT together they pull us with greatest force.
