Are You Committed to Weekend Warrior Execution?
Recently Jesse posted the above figure. It caught my eye and I wanted to expand upon the ideas.
Let assume that you work 40 hours per week. Probably most people average 50 hours. So let's go with 50 with commute if you are not working from home.
You are supposed to get 8 hours of sleep. We want you well-rested. The cost is 56 hours per week. Let’s give you extra 2 hours of naps to round it up to 58.
With 7 days and 24 hours, we get 168 hours in a week. Let us subtract those two figures to get, 168–58–50=60 hours of time that is available.
Now if you are single that time is yours. You control 60 hours or blow through 60 hours. The choice is yours.
If you have a spouse or partner then you have 30 hours. When you consider kids you are probably down to 15 hours at best per week.
Now let’s get back to Jesse…
How dow we win with those 15 hours? I would argue those are mostly on the weekend.
One of the best books I have read that specifically addresses weekend is by Laura Vanderkam. It is called What The Most Successful People Do On The Weekend. Awesome book!!!
In it, she teaches to think of the weekend in terms of several blocks of time that you will use to recharge yourself. Recharge does not just mean sit on the beach or stargaze. It could be BUT it really means doing things that will fulfill you.
SO back to our 15 hours. I suggest that you cheat and divide these 16 hours into 4 four hour blocks(notice I squeezed in an hour). That is your time AND only your time. You let the family know that those 16 hours are not negotiable and that you must have them to keep your sanity and achieve joy.
NOw that you have claimed them you must have a plan. I am assuming that the four blocks are on the weekend. starting with Friday night. You have to come up with actionable things that will fulfill you and nudge you towards your life goals.
Are 4 four hour hours blocks enough? Well, it might take more than one weekend BUT it will be a great start. You have started eating that elephant one bite at a time…one four-hour block at a time.
So claim the four-hour blocks, come up with a plan, and then show up. Do the work!!! If interrupted, don’t be a nice guy and simply push back. Unless there is blood on the floor do not get distracted. Keep moving.
I think you will be rewarded fairly quickly with this effort.
This is something I have been thinking about for a while. Wouldn’t it be nice to get a group of people that are holding themselves accountable to actually execute their 4 four blocks? Maybe get together on a Monday night to review what was planned last week, what got executed, and what will be executed next weekend.
There is magic in this….
