Are You Enjoying Your Digital Depression?
Goal: Connect the four horsemen pieces with a result
Last four articles have been pretty dark. They were based on material from Jim Kwik’s book Limitless that I am currently reading. Even the images have been apocalyptic in appearance.
Unfortunately that is the reality. Whether we are
- Deluged with tons of data being created
- Distracted with processing of data efficiently by switching
- Reduction in Deduction ability
- Suffering from Dementia due to decrease in our abilities to process
These four could easily lead to digital depression.
We live in a culture where we easily see the highlights from other people’s lives. It is in the form of pictures and stories that glorify excesses.
These highlight make it easy to deduce that the lives of others are better and we are less ______(fill in the word)
So what can we do about these four horsemen and the potential depression?
I believe that we have to stop paying attention to what others are doing with their lives. The digital disconnect would go a long way from slaying the four horsemen.
Get rid of your digital alarms, clicks, and alerts. Just turn them off.
Figure out what and how you can reduce your connection with work. One former colleague told me that every Friday he simply leaves his company issued phone in his desk. WOW!!! I would add a VM saying that the phone is at my desk and will be answered on Monday morning promptly when you are back at your desk.
Another thing that I believe will be helpful to restore a good state of mind is to simply go for a walk every day. I do this religiously every day. If I don’t I notice that I feel antsy and out of balance.
Lastly, this one suggestion is my own personal belief so take it for what it is worth, lift your head up. I am yet to meet a depressed person with their head up.
In my opinion, and without any science to back it up, I think that it is physically impossible to be depressed with your head up high. Our body posture for depression is slumped shoulders and head hung low. So to get rid of depression, visualize a confident joyful person and allow your body to mimic what that person looks like.
Notice the picture of the young lady has a smile. She is out and enjoying the world NOT digitally connected with her head up.
My nineteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Dec. 2020)
I gotta go…my future self alarm went off
