Yesterday while on a walk I was listening to the Entrepreneur on Fire podcast with Eric Partaker, the author a new book called the 3 Alarms. The content blew my mind with several powerful ideas.

Eric told a story of how he struggled to become his best self until he started setting up 3 alarms strategically for key areas in his life at

  • 6:30 am World Fitness Champion alarm
  • 9:00 am World Best Coach alarm
  • 6:30 pm World Best Husband and Father

The alarms serve a purpose to remind him to question himself if he is being the title of that alarm. If he is not, what does he needs to do in the moment to become that person? The alarm serves to remind him to take an action towards that identity and close the gap.

I found this idea mind blowing. We often use alarms on our phones to wake up and get to meetings. BUT this use of alarms is very special because it helps one focus on their future self. Eric knows that he is not the world fitness champion BUT by acting at that moment as if he is he can mold his identity towards his future self.

As an example, if he is lifting weights and he has only done 7 out of 10 reps and wants to quit, he will ask himself whether the world fittest man would only do 7 reps. This questioning is enough to urge him to go to 11 instead of 10 reps. This alarm and questions associated with it bring intentionality to his workout.

I believe that this idea of setting 3 key area alarms to nudge yourself toward what is important in your life is powerful and should be implemented immediately. Without these daily check-ins we slowly move towards wishing ourselves instead of building towards our best future self.

I got to go… my alarm went off
