Are You Skill Stacking to Become Successful?
Goal: To examine the idea of skill stack vs single great skill
There have been several podcasts and webinars on which I have heard the idea of skill stacking. I believe that the idea originated with Peter Thiel.
So what is it?
Everyone of us is exceptional at one thing. It could be singing, painting, writing, etc. That by itself is good but it does not make you unique.
How about a second exceptional skill?
Maybe you could draw cartoons and write? You could be a great cartoonist that still does not succeed.
Why?
You might be lacking the third exceptional skill of business. The ability to create a cartoon that resonates with people working in cubicle nation.
That is why Dilbert’s creator Scott Adams has been successful.
His art by itself is OK. His writing by itself is good. Combined with his MBA/economics and business experience makes him unique and a hit.
The big question is what is your skill stack?
What is mine?
I have 30+ years of leading people and projects. That is good. But not sufficient.
My experience is in several industries: steel/power, refining, chemical plants, industrial gasses, consulting, and software for both owners and EPCs. That is great but still not enough.
I have 20+ years of teaching experience at university level teaching engineering, mathematics, programming, business, and MBA courses.
I am an artist and an author.
Now we are talking UNIQUE skill stack.
There are very few people who can understand different industries, team building, teaching to fill knowledge gaps, mentoring to improve hard and soft skills, and leading teams to success like I do.
My stack set is the value I bring to the table. I can help any employer who needs a leader to transform their projects group into a world class organization.
I got to go…my future self alarm went off
