Are You Willing To Floss a Single Tooth?
…and why you should
Goal: Discuss the importance of small goals
Often when we set goals we go big. After all we are told to go big or go home. But is that the best way to achieve a goal?
No
Many years ago I watched a Ted talk by BJ Fogg who talked about changing oneself. He said that in order to change a habit, start small.
He said, “Suppose you want to start flossing as a regular habit.” Then set the goal of flossing one tooth. And reward yourself with a pat on the back and “You are Awesome!!!!” shout out to yourself.
This seems simple minded. But as last article discussed, do not confuse simplicity for simple mindedness.
In his research what BJ Fogg found is that if we set the bar super low it is easy to meet it and exceed it. So you decide to floss one tooth but because you take the time to floss one tooth you continue flossing the second tooth and third and son on.
Hell you might even floss your whole mouth. BUT remember that you only need to floss one tooth in order to meet your goal. ANything beyond one tooth is extra.
It is in the magic of that little extra that it will move you towards finishing more than you planned.
This is very powerful. It keeps you sanity while allowing your system to adjust to slowly moving towards the bigger goal.
My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)
I gotta go…my future self alarm went off
