BE/KNOW/DO…Which Two Out of Three Would You Choose?
Recently Chris Oh, a former coworker, wrote a post on Linkedin in which he gave a series of three characteristics from which you were to choose two.
(BE)For example, would you rather have a person
- has character, values, and skills to take the right action
- BUT takes no action.
(KNOW)Second example, would you rather have a person
- who happens to be skilled, effective, and takes action
- does not value what is right
(DO)Third example, would you rather have a person
- who takes action, has good values
- does not have skill to act effectively
Chis’ point was that two out of three characteristics would not be enough. You need someone who possesses all three.
Now back to reality…
In reality the world is full of situations where we not only fail ourselves BUT definitely fit the two out of three characteristics. Hell at times we might be one out of three. Let’s look at a six blends of the BE, KNOW, and DO.
Is BE>(KNOW and DO)?
(Read it as if the right person more important than the knowledge they have and actions they take?)
In this example we have a person who has good character but does not know or do the right action. This is a nice person who must be trained to become skilled and knowledgeable. Do you invest in this person?
Is Know>(BE and DO)?
In this example you have a knowledgeable person but they are not the right person for the job nor do the do the right things. You must let go of this person.
Is DO>(BE and KNOW)?
This is an action oriented person who wants to do something BUT they are not so nice and do not know what the right thing to do is. This person could be harmful to the team.
Is (BE and Know) >DO?
NOw we haved a person who is the right person and knowledgeable BUT does not take the right action. This could be coached. You can create the baby steps for the person to go though and get them to continue if they are willing.
Is (BE and DO) > KNOW?
This is a person who is nice and want to do things BUT often does not know what they do not know. This is back to training the person to do the right thing.
Is (KNOW and DO) > BE?
Last example is someone who is knowledgeable and does the right thing BUT are toxic to the group. This is not the person you want on the team.
After thinking through these a leader should ask themselves which blend is each employee. The ideal is that they posses all three BUT you as the leader have to decide if the investment in time will yield that “ideal” 3 out of 3 type of person.
Chris’ advice was that leaders need to “… exemplify, continuously improve, expect and develop in others all three.” The same advice should be followed for developing their team.
I believe that one must lead with the heart in order to build trust and connect to the team and have them want to improve
Why the picture?
This story reminded me that underneath our skins we all look the same. It is through our heart NOT our head that we will improve to 3 out of 3. ONe can not affect change without the heart. The skull is hard and the heart is soft.
My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)
I gotta go…my future self alarm went off

Be, Know OR Do (pick two)
Which person 👤would you rather have as a friend, ally and teammate?
A person who has the character 🙏and values to see 👀 and believe what is right and has the skills 👨🏼🎓to do so, but does not take action🎬.
A person who takes 🧗🏻♀️action to try to do what is right and who 😇 values what is right, but does not have the🥋skill to act effectively?
Two✌️out of three just does not work.
Leaders need to exemplify, continuously improve, expect and develop in others all three.🤹🏻♂️
Be, Know AND Do. Leaders wanted.
