Do You Create Derivative Products?

..no it is not Calculus all over again…

Goal: Discuss the idea of creating derivative products

I have written about 60 articles on medium. It is my goal to write a story of about 500–1000 words discussing a topic each day. The topics tend to focus on: Self-Improvement, Self-Awareness, Learning, Success, and Productivity.

Why?

I write to express my ideas. I write to clarify my thinking. I write to tell stories.

As you can see at the end of each one of my articles, I state the actual amount I make per month from Medium.com. Even though my articles tend to get read from 100–1000 people, I only made $0.02 cents in October, $0.07 cents in November. It is definitely not an income replacement strategy for now.

So why do it? Why use so much of my time writing daily articles?

I always think in terms of derivative products. Derivative products? What is a derivative product?

After writing my articles, I post them on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Majority of my readers come from LinkedIn. That is an interesting observation.

LinkedIn is social network for professionals. These professionals see their feed filled with stories. I try to provide an uplifting idea to think about. Hopefully to pose a question in my reader’s mind of whether something is true for that reader.

Even though I publish on medium, my derivative on LinkedIn is influence. By providing thoughtful articles I am trying to build a brand as a thought provoking writer. I am not posting pictures of cute kid, cat/dog, myself, dancing, reposting an aphorism, or writing stories about how to attract LinkedIn connections and business. Those belong on FB, Instagram and Tic Toc.

What else can I do with these articles?

Imagine writing 52*5=260 articles in one year. That means I would have written roughly 260*500= 130,000 words. That is a great start towards a good book. Any one or all of those areas Self-Improvement, Self-Awareness, Learning, Success, and Productivity can be crafted into an ebook.

What if each one of those 5 ebooks gets sold as a $0.99 book?

Each one of those 5 ebooks could become a course.

Each one of those 5 ebooks could become a live training seminar.

These are just a few derivatives I can think of. Thinking in terms of derivatives is important. Creating AND shipping. Shipping Derivatives! Shipping Derivatives of Derivatives!

My seven cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Nov. 2020)

I got to go…my future self alarm went off
