Do You Differentiate Between Happiness, Joy, and Life Satisfaction?
…and why you should?
Goal: Discuss the difference between the three
Happiness is mostly social. If we are busy and content with our social circle, then we are happy.
There was a study that showed that above $75,000 the amount of happiness people recorded was not increased. So if you are making close to $75,000 or slightly more you are about as happy as it gets.
Again, happiness is mostly social not economic. Although often we confuse the two. To me, it is mostly about the who. Who am I with. How do I feel when I am with those people?
How about joy?
I would define joy as happiness applied to your work and people you have in your life. To me it is a blend of work and people. It is satisfaction with the work and the people in my life that brings me joy.
Life satisfaction is what most people truly define as happiness. BUT it is not. Life satisfaction is often your interpretation of how successful and complete your life is. If you feel that you have reached the pinnacle of your profession then you are probably happy with your life.
With those three ideas in mind, what can we do with them?
Observe that people that are billionaires still have problems in their lives. They might be satisfied that they have achieved financial success BUT many still continue to work. If life satisfaction is all about the money then you have to know when enough is enough. For most of them, there is no enough.
Interestingly, when asked most people would prefer to have life satisfaction, i.e money, over joy. That one blows my mind. They would rather be rich with money and think that money will solve all of their problems.
But as we know that seldom happens.
Don’t get me wrong, money is a great lubricator. It makes things happen a lot smoother. It can help relationships especially marital relationships. Majority of marital issues revolve around money.
BUT as Bezos’ marriage collapse taught us, money can help 80%(my estimate)of the relationship stay afloat. The other 20%(my estimate)is satisfaction and joy you feel with the person you are in relationship with.
So what can we do wit these ideas?
I recommend you get yourself a card and give yourself a score (1- worst, 10 best) for each of these area. BE BRUTALLY HONEST WITH YOURSELF. Stop each week and record your scores. After you have recorded the scores, ask yourself, what could slightly improve the scores in each area. Try to identify at least one thing you can do to get better in each.
In these three things, I wish you enough.
