Do You Give Yourself Constraints?
Goal: Constraints could free you if you let them
Three years ago I bought a house. Like most homes, our house had lots of walls. Empty gray walls with white trim on top and bottom.
My wife told me that it was my job to fill the walls with art. I can paint anything as long as I used white, black, gray, and silver.
I used to be an artist 27 years ago and this was very constraining. Why couldn’t I use other colors?
After painting my first canvas with Bruce Lee, I realized that she did me a favor. I can focus on the piece instead of making sure the colors were perfectly selected.
Remember this was a first piece after 27 years. It took me a month. I was scared to paint it. The first time I placed black on the canvas I cringed. I felt like I was destroying the pencil version underneath.
Second painting of JJ Watt took 2 weeks.
Third painting took 1 week and it was a bigger 48x72 inch canvas. I broke her down and used a bit of brown. It was James Harden and I just could not get brown out of the colors with which I was constrained. I cheated a bit.
Recently she told me she wanted me to do a new painting with many colors.
What???
The constraint has been lifted. Now I am getting nervous. LOL
I got to go…my future self alarm went off
