Do You Take Time Off for Your Mental Health?
…to toughen up..
Goal: The importance of taking time off
Have you ever been tired when you wake up after sleeping 8 hours? Have you been tired mid morning and have not done anything strenuous? How about being tired in early afternoon every day?
You might not be tired but mentally exhausted.
In many parts, working hard has become a badge of honor. Working while on vacation is standard. Answering work calls on weekends is expected.
All of those things lead to not being able to segregate work from your life outside of work. And eventually lead to mental exhaustion.
I doubt that most people realize the mental stress is draining them physically.
When we are mentally stressed/exhausted our brain is burning more calories than normal. Which by itself is at least 25% of our calorie intake. I don’t have any data to confirm BUT I believe that when we are stressed it probably spikes to 50%.
Why do you think people reach for food when they are stressed?
The picture suggests a cure. Taking a day away from everything just to recover your mental health. Telling the world to F-off.
This would be hard to pull off for most of us. BUT I believe that at least one day every two weeks should be labeled mental health day.
When I lived in Chicago area, I often went downtown on Saturdays and hung out in an area at the intersection of State and Rush and allows for people watching. (the area is interestingly called Viagra triangle)
That area is close to a Jewish temple and on Saturday you would see families walk to the temple and after the service some would join in the conversations. Some of the members that go to that temple were fairly religious and did not operate any electronics on Saturday. They would not even press an elevator button or even turn on a crock pot. Saturday they normally would spend time with the family in prayer and relaxation. It was their Sabbath.
Whether you are religious or not, we should all have a mental Sabbath. Put away the phone, computer, TV. Go for a walk in nature. Go for a walk preferably by yourself or with your family. Make a meal together and just simply let the mind rest. Recharge.
This is tough to do BUT I believe will help us reduce the mental exhaustion.
My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)
