Have You Written an Email to Your Future Self?

A few months ago I spent a month going through exercises by Dr. Benjamin Hardy’s future self course. I loved the idea.

So the concept of thinking about the desired future self has been with me for a few months. As a matter of fact, you might have noticed it at the end of each column.

I recently listened to Knowledge Project podcast with a professor of economics and he suggested that we start writing ourselves emails to be delivered into the future.

BOOOOM!!!! My mind was blown… BOOOM!!!

Imagine writing yourself a note to be opened a month in the future. You tell yourself about what you are thinking, planning, and are going to execute.

A month later you am email arrives and you read the thoughts of your old self. You can see what you planned and whether it played out the way you thought it would. Did you execute the things you wanted?

I believe that this is a powerful exercise. It forces us to address the gap between our thoughts and actions. It forces us to see how closely we predicted our own “present” reality.

I have not done this yet BUT plan to generate a month, three, six, none month, and 12 month emails. My suspicion is that the month out it will be 80% correct. 6 months out it will be 50% correct. 12 months out I suspect 25% correct.

Why?

We are horrible at predicting our future. There too many variable. Just like weather it is fairly accurate one day out but outside of that it is a 50% correct.

The power of this exercise is over time to get better. None of us are perfect. That should not be our goal. Our goal should be to be better than our former selves. That is improvement. That is enjoying the journey without stressing over perfection.

I strongly urge you to test this out. I believe that most email programs have a delay feature. Write a note and send it to yourself with the delay. Spend an hour reading your note and asking yourself what you could have done for the gap to be smaller.

Rinse and repeat.

My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)

I got to go…my future self alarm went off
