Is This a Rejection Or Redirection?

Hint: #3 simply pivoting

Goal: Discuss the difference between personal rejection and redirection

I have been through the corporate wheel of approval and disapproval many times. At times I wondered if it was me or “them”.

Maybe that is the wrong way to look at it?

One can look at being let go as a rejection of your work. One can look at being fired as rejection of you by the “team”. Rejection of your skill set.

If one looks at it that way they will enter a dark place and get depressed. It is hard on the mind to feel that the work that one does is not good. Even harder to believe that most of the people you called “friends” which were really work associates who don’t want to work with you any more. The rejection of what you bring to the table to make the team better and the idea that the team would be better without you.

Pretty harsh!!!

What if we should be looking at it as redirection?

Redirection to truly understand the quality of your work. Redirection to build up your social and interpersonal skills. Time to add tools to your skill set. Time to build up instead of tear down.

Personally I have never self-identified with a job. I have loved all of the jobs I have had in my career for different reasons.

BUT they were not me. I was never an “engineer” in a steel mill. I was never a “professor” at universities. I was never a “project manager” or “manager of projects”, etc.

These are just labels. I was assigned those labels by those companies BUT I was always more that those labels.

I am a creative person who loves to enter different industries and companies and help them solve problems. It does not matter whether I am an individual contributor or the leader, I want to bring value by helping the team get better and solve bigger problems.

For me it has never been about Rejection vs. Redirection. It has always been both. When I am REJECTED, I do not take it personal and look for the opportunity to REDIRECT.

People these days often use the term Pivoting. To me, PIVOTING is the REDIRECTION you choose after being REJECTED by your customer or company. This is where growth comes from. Growth does not come from running a loop of “why did this happen to me”

Don’t take stupid business decisions as personal. Pivot and grow.

My two cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com in October 2020)

I got to go…my future self alarm went off
