Goal: Discuss Digital Deduction

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about Google being an answer engine even though most people believe it is a search engine. Pose any question and you are given an answer instead of being directed to another site where you can find it. It is so quick at retrieving that answer and that it is slightly dangerous.

Why?

The ability to find that answer tends to build people’s confidence in their own knowledge. If you can find anything quickly then you must be intelligent?

Not quite…

Finding an answer to a question is an important skill BUT it is not intelligence. The danger in believing that it is leads to overconfidence in one’s abilities. And ultimately that overconfidence results in poor decision making.

If you were to go back in time 50 years ago, an intelligent person was someone who held internally information that they had constructed over their lifetime. Dense information derived on data. They were able to use that information to make better decision and appear wise. That person looked cultured.

What we now have is people who are data regurgitators. They have the answer BUT the ability to transfer and deduce that into meaningful information is missing.

The world as we know it is getting more complex by the minute. As we have seen recently, being fed bad data is dangerous. Add to that mix the data overload and technology and you have misled people that feel that they have data BUT are in reality not informed.

None of us like it when others try to impose their thinking on us. I have a friend who routinely will come to a common gathering place with an agenda to push his poor data and force his opinion on others. Even though he is educated, he is ignorant and easily debunked.

DIGITAL DEDUCTION is the third of our modern digital villain.

So how do we fix this?

It is unlikely that we will stop doing what we normally do and stop getting the data that we normally get. I propose that we have to PAUSE and evaluate that data. Start by saying, “What is this data is all wrong?” Or “What if this data was contrived by others to mislead me?”

Go an get opposing views. Once you completely disagree with and review the facts that they are sharing and supposedly misleading with. Do your own thinking by comparing the two data sets. Don’t allow others shove you into a wall with your head leading.

It is better to use your head and deduce what might not be comfortable than to allow people to sway you into alternative lies.

My nineteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Dec. 2020)

I gotta go…my future self alarm went off
