What Are You Wrong About As We Start 2021?
…3 great exercises to help you deal
Goal: Discuss a couple of ideas of how to react when confronted with an opinion or ideas you disagree with
Our beliefs are hard for us to shake. We love what we believe to be true. They are embedded inside us so deep that we would have to really try to pry them out.
What if we are wrong about what we believe?
Hopefully you realize that we are all in the business of looking for confirmation to the things we know. We seldom look for information on something that we quickly dismiss as wrong.
Why?
It does not feel good to integrate something different in our belief system. We just rather hold on to something that we believe is true.
What if we are wrong?
Next time someone expresses something that you disagree with, take an hour and do a search supporting that idea. What information supports that view? How good is the information? How good are the sources?
The ask yourself, if it makes any difference in your view?
Another thing to try is when someone you dislike expresses an opinion you disagree with, ask yourself if someone you love and respect expressed the same idea would you accept it?
After you have done these two exercises with which you (1) established whether there is any factual basis for the idea and (2) whether it is the source that is delivering it that is rubbing you the wrong way PAUSE and ponder the question, “What if I am wrong?”
The third idea that I want to add to your tools is the idea of starting every Monday morning by asking yourself, “What is that I am certain of that I could be completely wrong about?”
This last one is really asking yourself not whether you might be completely wrong about something BUT that you are certain is wrong. This one is tough.
POWERFUL!!!
Lately I have had a hard time listening to people when they offer false information about Covid, masks, or anything about science. It is hard to listen to some friends who are educated but falsely believe some of the alt reality. I have even been rude to cut them off and tell them that what they are saying is stupid. Facts are facts. They and I might not like them but pandemic is not like the flu. Masks do help but are not 100% protection.
I have tried using the three tools and now feel better to report that I am comfortable with my knowledge of the virus, how it spreads, why it spreads, and what we can do to reduce the chances of getting it.
Again, I might be wrong….
My nineteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Dec. 2020)
I got to go…my future self alarm went off
