What if Your Job is Eliminated by AI by 2025?
…what will you do?
Recently I heard that 58% of all jobs will be able to be done by AI by 2025. That might seem pretty high to you.
BUT let’s go with the statistic as if it was true…
I have been very fortunate in my life that I have changed industries several times. My career path has taken me from steel mill to academia to refineries to chemical plants to engineering offices to industrial gasses to consulting to agribusiness.
Am I unique? Yes, I am. BUT before I get a big head let me confess that I am also not unique.
I just happen to believe that we must be adaptive. In every situation we should always pause and ask ourselves how to be more adaptive. Can you always become more adaptive in any situation? Yes, you can…
AI is good at taking lots of data, crunching it and producing information. BUT that is it.
Let me give you an example, suppose you had a bunch of data points. AI would take that raw data and just fit a curve. Let us assume it is a line. That best fit line would be of the form y=mx+b where m is slope and b is y-intercept.
The AI system’s work is done. It does not know how you will use that information. It has no true knowledge, which is the next level, of what to do with the information.
So the data gathering and information creation will be replaced. Knowledge, understanding, and wisdom levels will not be replaced by 2025.
So what can you do?
You need to raise your level in your field. You must get beyond the data and information level and get into the knowledge level and above. This is no longer if you should BUT a must do.
I do not know what knowledge level means to you in your field. For me in project management means that data and information will be automated and now I need to focus on teams applying those properly and appropriately. They will need to figure out how to interface with this new data and information conversion and where it is appropriate.
There is an old computer science saying that teaches, “Garbage in, garbage out.” The teams have to be able to evaluate the data for errors and extreme values. This could sway them to a conclusion(information) that is just absolutely wrong.
So raise your level but raising your thoughts and actions. That is the only way you will survive the change. Your cheese will move and you better put your running shoes on and start going down some dark alleys to find your next cheese location.
