What is the Mirror Telling You
…and why you should focus on something else
Humans are complex beings. Even when things are simple often we mold them into complex. We seem to thrive on making things more complex.
During our short stint on this planet, about 300,000 years, we have had to learn to fit in groups. In the past, without groups we were left to fend for ourselves in the wilderness and not share in the group resources. Most often this led to an early demise.
This importance of the outside view is imbedded in our DNA. We worry about the outside world made up by our or other groups because without it we are back to fending for ourselves.
Today that fending and finding a new group is easier BUT still the DNA does not change that fast. The last 50 years have accelerated this change BUT it is still embedded.
I would even say that the last 20 years have seen a hockey stick in our evolution towards independence. We like groups and people BUT we often prefer to be by ourselves. The idea of a free agent working from anywhere in the world was unheard of just 20 years ago.
It is important to note that we worry about the outside world so much that we often forget about our own inside world. The inside world is the one we feel through our emotions. Sometimes we experience such a burst of emotions mainly because they have been repressed them for so long.
Recently in my feed I found a statement that I am calling the The dilemma of the mirror.
The mirror is a curse- it only shows us the outside of ourselves- know that who you are inside is ALWAYS more important- Gil Kaelin
What is the lesson?
When we are young we need to learn about the outside world. We need to adjust to the world. The world judges these cute little people gently and they get lulled into believing that the outside view is everything. Younger generations have become professional photographers and great at marketing themselves. It is as if their outside world should influence our internal world.
BUT there has to be a time when we stop and realize that what we are on the inside is even more important. We have to actively work to become beautiful on the inside NOT just on the superficial outside in beautiful surroundings.
Hopefully as we age, we must learn how to age with wisdom. That process requires that we learn how to take those harsh life lessons and start seeing them softly and as lessons towards enlightenment. Lessons that have chiseled away the marble to show our true self that was hiding inside. A beautiful self.
Why the Picture?
I looked for a picture of a mirror BUT this picture was more representative. The person we are looking at has her head slightly elevated. She is deep in thought. We see that she is standing in a slight rain symbolizing difficulty but not a storm. Her face shows the serenity of her inside.
My four cents…
