What is the Purpose of Pain?

…and why you should notice it

Goal: To discuss what moves us into action

Do you believe in God? Is your God benevolent? Benevolent is not a word that is often used. It simply means that God is disposed to doing good.

The question then is…

If you are a benevolent God, you would not punish your children. Would you?

In my vision of God, my God is not punitive. Punishing for sake of teaching is something that we as parents often do. BUT a slight tap on the pamper is trying to get the little person’s attention NOT put them in pain.

So as adults why do we often feel like we are in pain?

Is the purpose of pain, like the punishment given to children, to get our attention? It could be but I doubt it.

One reason why pain is needed is not the suffering part. It is the action part. The pain has to be big enough to get our attention BUT to also force us to act.

There is an old joke about two people noticing a dog sitting on a nail. One person notes that the dog is sitting on a nail. Second person agrees that the dog is sitting on a nail. First person then wonders when the dog would get up from the nail. Second person says, “ when the pain is large enough.”

People are the same. Our pain has to be great enough to get up and move towards a solution. I believe that it is not suffering that God wants us to experience BUT the action that we are being driven towards.

On a slightly different view of pain…

Many years ago before running I noticed my knee would hurt. At times my Achilles muscles had a slight ache to them. BUT I went out for a run anyway.

There are always times during a run that something will start hurting. Not to the point that I stop the run totally BUT maybe walk for 100 feet or so. Then I restart.

What I have learned that pain comes in waves. When it comes, I recognize it. I acknowledge it and realize that it will go away fairly quickly. Almost as quickly as it came. At times I might stop and walk for a bit and then restart.

I have only stopped once in a half marathon and walked the last 3 miles. My muscles were so badly cramped up due to dehydration.

My three cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Feb. 2021)

I got to go…my future self alarm went off
