What Makes a Championship Team?

Is it the Superstar/Players, Coach, OR Management

Goal: To discuss the different pieces that make up organizations and teams

I want to talk about the three pieces that make up a championship effort: Management, Coach, Superstar(s) and players. These three pieces will be discussed in a historical content by using teams from the past that were extremely successful.

Our First example of these three pieces are the Chicago Bulls. Originally when Michael Jordan joined the team he was known to score 50+ points in a game BUT the team lose the game. After changing the coach and adding some other key players, Bulls went on to win two sets of three in a row championships. (Jordan was out for one year between the first and second three peats) Some of the players around Jordan stayed the same and some changed out.

Why is this example important to bring up?

One can say that the reason the Bulls won was because they had the greatest player to ever play in the NBA. But they would be wrong. He could not win by himself. He did not win any more championships after the Bulls.

Management could argue that they were the key ingredient because they put the teams together. They were important but after the six championships they never created anything even close to the original teams.

Phil Jackson could argue that he was the key ingredient and I would have to agree because he later won three more championships.

Let’s move on to the New England Patriot Run. Arguable among the best franchises in the NFL. They have won 6 championships in 9 appearances.

One can do the same analysis and debate whether the owners were the cause for winning. They played a part but not key part.

Bill Belichick is considered a genius coach. He has always been able to take away the opponents key strength while executing what makes his teams best. BUT before Brady and since he has not won a championship.

Brady as we saw Sunday night was able to move on from the Patriots and win his seventh championship. One could easily concede that he must have been the key ingredient.

Toronto Raptors are another organization worthy to discuss. A couple of years ago they were able to put together a team that won the NBA finals. In one season they went from average to a champion.

Performing the same analysis…

The coach is OK BUT not a super coach. Most likely he will not win another championship again.

Kwame Leonard is a good player BUT he is not a superstar. He was able to come in and play at a very high level and with the support of other players won. This year with a a better team he struggled and Clippers were eliminated.

The management of the Raptors deserves a lot of credit. They were able to put together a team that within one year won the championship. Pretty impressive and we would have to say that they were the key ingredient.

Lastly let us discuss the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What we saw on Sunday night was GOAT vs. mini GOAT. The greatest quarterback of all time took on another great player who if time allows would win several more championships.

The organization has a few great players but did not have a leader and as one of the managers said after the awards realized that they needed someone that knew how to win a championship. Tom Brady was a no brainer for them.

What you see in front of you is very interesting to me. I always watch games for the strategy and tactics and NOT the physical aspects.

How does an organization become a championship worthy organization?

To me sports teach many lessons of leadership and ability to take 1+1+1 and make it greater than 3. As you can see from these examples it takes a blend of the three pieces. One is going to be the key while the others are supporting the key ingredient.

If I had to assign percentages to the three pieces for an organization I would give 40% to coach, 30% team makeup and chemistry with superstars, and 30% management decisions.

Wait!!! 40% for the coach. Yup, I believe Belichick will come back and win another championship. He knows how to take a team to the next level.

That is not to say that Brady will not win another one in Tampa. He will if the players around him are retained, coach is rewarded, and management does not make any stupid moves to piss people off.

Will Chiefs come back?

They have a great coach, superstar quarterback, a few great players, and should be able to come back if they are hungry enough after what they did this year.

I would put my money on Tampa again next year…

My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)

I gotta go…my future self alarm went off
