Why Freedom is NOT the Greatest Strength of USA?
…and what is
Goal: Discuss changes to our immigration and innovation situation
I have thought about this idea for many years. I am not saying it is not a strength BUT not its greatest strength. Without a free society our lives are controlled. We are far from that.
However, even though we are free we are not any more free than French, Germans, Japanese, Italians, etc. Many countries are free, have a free press, and can speak against those in power.
This could be a very long article arguing this point BUT that is not the purpose.
America’s greatest strength is ability to innovate. The ability to create products and services that the world wants to use. Because of this the standard of living we have is pretty high compared to the rest of the world.
The world is not trying to copy the freedom that we want it is trying to copy the idea generating Silicon Valley. It might be harder to copy Silicon Valley than the freedom that most people think we have.
Although not the only place of innovation, what makes Silicon Valley such an important place is the dynamic. It allows for people and idea jumping between companies and interactions from bumping into other creative people. The mixture of schools, companies and people is unique.
BUT what if everyone is working from home?
That destroys one of the legs of the triangle. And without that leg, the valley is dead.
Many years ago I read somewhere that 40+% of the people in Silicon valley are from other countries. So if they are working from home, why would they come to Silicon Valley to work? They might just build their products elsewhere including their home countries.
The US must rethink this idea. We have to have innovation centers that create and nurture people to be leading in many technologies and fields. If not, our standard will collapse.
The last administration wrongly held back on H1 visas. I would reverse it by allowing only H1 visas instead of family relation immigration. We would not only raise the standard of living BUT also raise our innovation standards.
This administration wants to give amnesty to all illegals in the country. This is also a wrong immigration policy since it rewards the people who came here illegally to work. There is a reason why there are 12 million illegals today. Amnesty was given by Regan in the 80s.
What is needed is a simple 5 year work permit, and ability to go back and forth to their home country freely, for people that are currently here illegally and after 5 years if their job still requires them they are to apply back in their home country for a legal entry. Simple!!!! This way they do not get ahead of anyone trying to come in legally.
I believe that this country would be surprised at the number that will never apply for the citizenship. They want to live here and earn a living BUT if they could go home when they retire most would do it.
What about the “dreamers”?
The status of the parents should be one with a work permit. The kids under 18 should be given a national ID that allows them the freedom to attend school and travel. Call it a Yellow card instead of a green card. After five years they apply to become citizens. Simple!!!
This might be controversial. I know BUT it needs to be said. Without the innovation and the source of that innovation our standard will collapse and with it the freedom for which many people died.
