Why is My Phone Being Nostalgic?

..real vs. fake nostalgia

Goal: Discuss enjoying moments from the past

I have an interesting habit. Once a day, I open my phone and go to the photos app and simply slide down to a random spot.

An image pops up from my past. It is always pleasurable to try to remember a moment. Sometimes it is easy and at times it is challenging.

Not every moment that we capture with our phones is memorable or remarkable(worth remarking about). But we continue to take photos.

We are hoarders of photos. I am willing to bet that 99.999% of all photos taken never get processed OR are even looked at again.

The effort to take a photo is so easy. It is quick and often we take two just to make sure we get the shot. Then we never look at them.

I also get a notice from my phone reminding me of an event from my past that occurred on this date. It sometimes gives me several years worth of pictures from that day.

Interesting..

Is my phone being nostalgic?

Nope…

Google probably has some algorithm. It probably looks at the date and if there are a lot of photographs on that date, deems that date as an interesting group of photos. Then it takes that group and reduces the duplicates that people take just in case the first one was not good. The algorothm might also consider lighting and blurriness as criteria to reduce the number even more. It probably also consider how many people are in the picture. The more the merrier. The small subset of pictures it then presented to you over the next few years.

Why does Google go through this small bit of calculating?

By reviewing these photos Google if trying to interest us into creating a book for print and BAAAM they make money.

I do have to admit that whether self-inflicted or algorithm created, I enjoy looking through these photos. For someone that talks about a future self, I often enjoy looking at my past experiences.

Maybe it is a bit of nostalgia?

Maybe I will see something I missed in that moment that I took the picture?

Maybe I can truly relive the moment instead of focusing on taking a picture?

Or…just print the book

My sixteen cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Jan. 2021)

I got to go…my future self alarm went off
