You ain’t Jack!!!
who is Jack?
Goal: To discuss what it means to be Jack
Many years ago my wife and I were having a conversation about a person. This person seemed to have succeeded wildly. So it was surprising when my wife said, “He is not Jack?” (She does not use slang)
Why?
The person life seemed very successful BUT there seemed to be gaps in his life. They might be successful at work BUT their personal life was horrible. Their outward appearance might be perfect BUT they are crumbling inside.
That never happens…
Well, recently we had a great example that exploded right in front of us. His name was Tony Hsieh. But he died in a fire you say.
What?
Tony was my business hero. The man’s name was synonymous with happiness and company culture. His fame was based on leading a company based on company culture that not only supported their employees BUT also made their customers happy.
Those are the outward signs that we all see.
Internally, from what I read, he struggled with drugs. He retired from his job as CEO a few months ago and many stories say that he was heading to rehab. I wish he would have made it and was able to clean himself up. Tony had so much in him that he could have shared with us.
What the lesson from Tony is that we must find a balance. A balance between outward and inward success. Both are important and either one can send the other into hell. We don’t want hell.
To keep away from trouble I suggest you sit down and self-evaluate yourself on key life categories (0 bad- 10 excellent):
Family
Work
Relationships with key people in your home, at work, with friends
Financial
House
Clothes
Car
Cleanliness of home, car, office, etc…
Addictions
Illnesses
Mental illnesses(depression, anxiety, bi-polar, etc.)
.etc (You define additional areas that are meaningful)
Don’t inflate your scores. We all fool ourselves. It is easiest to fool oneself into believing that everything is well.
So let us define Jack. If you could score yourself 8 and above you are balanced and can call yourself Jack. If any one of the areas are 7 and below, you must come up with 3 items that you can work on to correct. Think of these areas as spokes on a wheel. If any one of them is shorter, the wheel will roll but NOT smoothly.
You want the Quality of LIfe (QOL) score to be 80% of the total score for all areas. The balance in your QOL score will provide a safety net against hurting yourself with a weakness. It will keep you away from hell.
You want to be Jack…
My seven cents….(this is what I earned from Medium.com for Nov. 2020)
I got to go…my future self alarm went off
